The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) is now split into two distinct factions following the expulsion of its chairperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa and four members of his executive from Zanu-PF early this year.

The ministry responsible for the welfare of war veterans is now being accused of taking sides by backing the Mandi Chimene-led splinter group, which is linked to the G40 faction in Zanu-PF.

On the other hand, Mutsvangwa's executive is said to be behind Team Lacoste, which is linked to Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

War Veterans minister, Tshinga Dube (TD) and his permanent secretary, retired Brigadier-General Walter Asher Tapfumaneyi (WT) admitted the divisions had their roots in Zanu-PF factionalism. The two also spoke about various issues affecting the former fighters.

Meanwhile, the war between President Robert Mugabe and war veterans continues to escalate, with the former fighters demanding that the veteran leader severs ties with G40 if he ever to entertains any hope of working with them again.

War veterans' chairperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa after a meeting of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans' Association (ZNLWVA) in Masvingo at the weekend said that only after Mugabe ditches G40 would his group start working with him again. There is no love lost between Mugabe and the war veterans, with the former fighters announcing they had ditched the veteran leader as their patron.

For many years, the war veterans, now fighting in Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa's corner in the Zanu-PF succession race, have been the bedrock of Mugabe's continued hold on power and their fresh demand is likely to put him in a corner, with reports that his wife, First Lady Grace Mugabe is linked to G40.
