Unit key to Zim-Asset implementation

03 Dec 2014 at 09:28hrs | Views

Every year on 22 December Zimbabweans join hands and celebrate National Unity Day which was brought by the Unit Accord signed on 22 December 1987 by President Robert Mugabe and the late national hero Vice President Joshua Nkomo.

As a nation, we should bury our political differences and become united in order to achieve socio-economic growth and full implementation of Zim-Asset.

The only way to ensure success in our country's endeavors is to move together as one united nation. If we work together as Zimbabweans in addressing some of the challenges affecting our country's development we will indeed prosper.

It is of paramount importance that we look at ourselves as a whole nation not only as individuals in trying to conquer the drawbacks that are bedeviling the economic growth of our country.

We are a formidable force as a country if we are united, nevertheless, if we are divided we are nothing but weak. Everyone's contribution is necessary in nation building. If the nation is united, even the investors will be enticed to come and do business in our nation.  Where there is unity there is development.

It is therefore our responsibility as government, private sector and citizens to invest in our mother land Zimbabwe by increasing the productivity of our land so that we can have increased food security whereby we can export and generate revenue rather than importing food from neighbouring countries.

In as much as government is making efforts in mobilizing funds and resources for economic development, stakeholders should also be involved and more resources should be channeled towards improving access to health, sanitation and water.

The implementation of Zim-Asset can only be accelerated through harmony. There is need to harness the energy, resourcefulness and enthusiasm of youths so that they contribute positively to the country's economy.

It is imperative to note that, unity, peace and stability are a prerequisite for socio-economic development, hence the need to redouble these efforts in nation building.

Without the chain of relationships between governments, the private sector, civil society and citizens at large, it will be impossible for our country to prosper. The independence that our country attained 34 years back should now translate into economic development and empowerment of the ordinary Zimbabweans. To add on, the government has redistributed the land to the black majority through the land reform programme.

Despite political background, all politicians should have an interest of resuscitating the economy. Politicians, private sector, business community and able individuals should assist government through mobilizing funds for reviving the nations' economy.

It is however, worrisome that the ZAPU president Dumiso Dabengwa has recently announced that his party has pulled out of the ruling party ZANU-PF stating that the unity pact  was no longer achieving its purpose.

In short, united we stand divided we fall.
