Some 59 golfers who attended the Ok Zimbabwe Southern Tours Invitation Golf Tournament have condemned the state of Masvingo Golf Club whose ceiling is falling in and the roof leaking.
Masvingo Mirror reported that the floor of the club and the security wall around the field were also condemned during the award giving ceremony after the tournament on Saturday evening.
However, the golfers parted on a happy note when those appealed to for support agreed to finance the repairs.
The country's leading funeral assurance company, Nyaradzo Group, Ok Zimbabwe, Clever Mumbengegwei of Brick and Tiles and Professor Jonathan Matenga, a prominent medical doctor will do the renovations beginning next month.
Professor Matenga of the University of Zimbabwe School of Medicine led the golfers in identifying companies that could assist in the renovations and all the three that he nominated for the work agreed to support.
The tournament brought together managers of top companies from throughout the country and leading professionals including medical doctors.
"I will provide the tiles for the bathroom, OK Zimbabwe will provide tiles for the ladies toilet and Nyaradzo will renovate the bar ceiling, floor and roof," he suggested to thunderous applause from the golfers.
Nyaradzo Group chief executive officer Phillip Mataranyika who also played golf over the two days confirmed the developments.
Athough there were suggestions to rename the complex to "Nyaradzo Bar" Mataranyika could neither confirm nor deny it.
"I am not sure about the renaming yet, but we are redoing it completely as soon as we get the things required to do the work," he said.
Masvingo Golf Club House was built in 1904 with the assistance of the Richards family and was upgraded in the 1980s to club house with a bar. N. Richards Group helped in the construction as part of its corporate social responsibility and since then it has never been renovated hence the deterioration in the facilities and outlook.
Other parts of the perimeter fence have collapsed and vagrants are gaining entry and leaving the green lawn with litter.
In 2015 there was a fierce debate on whether to continue running the bar or close it as it had become a financial drain on the main Sports Club.
