BULAWAYO-BASED uLoyiko Theatre Group has embarked on a mission to put the emotive Gukurahundi massacres on an international platform through art.

It emerged this week that the South Africa-based outfit has already started fund-raising for their maiden trip to the United States of America where they will stage the emotive play dubbed the Matabeleland Gukurahundi Genocide at International Stage 2020.

The play will showcase at Hollywood Fringe Festival and San Diago Fringe Festival to be held in America in June and July respectively.

The outfit is also looking forward to a London Tour this year at the invitation of the 1893 Mthwakazi Human Rights Restoration Movement at a date yet to be announced.

"This tour will contribute significantly towards the international recognition of the Matabeleland Genocide as well as create an impetus for Truth, Justice and Reparations for the people of Matabeleland," said fund-raising organiser Thembani Dube.

He further noted that this will be a once in life time opportunity for uLoyiko to premiere the play on a world-wide platform to advance international recognition of the genocide that took place between 1983 and 1987 in Zimbabwe, where an estimated over 20 000 people from Matabeleland and Midlands region perished at the hands of the North Korea-trained Fifth Brigade.

uLoyiko Theatre ensemble group was assembled by young South Africans in Cape Town and launched on June 16, 2016.

It has since collaborated with genocide victims and encouraged the sharing of their experiences during the Genocide.

The play premiered in South Africa's National State Theatre in Pretoria in June 2019.

It has also won best ensemble at Zabalaza Festival at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in 2017.
