A 25-YEAR-OLD Guruve copper cable thief was sentenced to a 10 year mandatory sentence by Guruve resident magistrate Shingirai Mutiro yesterday after he was found in possession of 40,5 kilograms of copper cables valued at RTGS$2 220.

Airstrip Zhoya pleaded not guilty and was incarcerated after full trial.

Prosecutor Carson Kundiona told the court that on November 20 an official Telone received a tip off that Zhoya had boarded a Harare bound kombi to go and sell the cable; the official also boarded the same kombi and advised the driver to drive the convict in the police station.

The driver drove the kombi in the police station where Zhoya was found in position of the stolen cable which was stashed in a sack and failed to produce a license for his loot leading to his arrest.

In nailing the convict Kundiona told the magistrate to give a deterrent sentence to Zhoya saying crimes of this nature disrupt smooth business and social communication.

"Your Worship may you give this person a deterrent  sentence since crimes of this nature disrupt smooth business and social communication and bring unmitigated loss and inconveniences , additionally  disrupting communication lines exposes the area to security threats and courts must not hesistate to impose a heavy custodial sentence," he said.
