Government has warned Zimbabweans to be on the lookout for a fake letter purportedly written by President Emmerson Mnangagwa directing property owners not to charge rent because of the 21-day lock down to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Mnangagwa's spokesperson George Charamba said his boss has nothing to do with the latter.

"There is a fake Press Statement purportedly bearing an authentic signature of the State President, and purporting to direct property owners on rentals. The Statement has nothing to do with the President or his Office, and actually passes for criminal conduct. Kindly disregard it," said Charamba on his Twitter page.

Charamba was rapped by followers for communicating official business using his @Jamwanda2 Twitter handle.

"How can a person communicate on behalf of the President from behind a mask? At least Nick Mangwana understands the need for transparency and so turns up and shows his face and does not hide. Whilst he is not the sharpest tool in the shed he has the courage and conviction of his beliefs," said Norman Ngwenya.

Some however, wished that the letter was actually genuine.

"The rentals issue is another matter you need to take to the powers that be, surely we are affected and mind you we have workers whom are expecting salaries for same period of lockdown," said Captain Konza.
