FOUR Zimbabweans who illegally skipped the border from South Africa to attend a funeral in Umzingwane District in Matabeleland South Province have been placed in mandatory quarantine after the community sold them out.

This comes after more than a hundred Zimbabweans have escaped from quarantine centres dotted around the country, while some have reportedly used ungazetted entry points to sneak back into the country following the closure of borders due to Covid-19 outbreak.

The government has made it mandatory that those who return from other countries should be placed in mandatory quarantine and undergo Covid-19 testing in line with ministry of Health guidelines.

"Umzingwane District yesterday (Wednesday) received four people who illegally sneaked into the country to attend a funeral. They were reported by the community and they are now quarantined at Esikhoveni Training Institute. The community took responsibility for its own safety," government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said on Thursday.

The government has since declared that it is now a crime to harbour returnees who would have escaped from quarantine or who might have skipped borders back into the country.

This comes at a time the government is concerned by the recent surge in confirmed Covid-19 cases which have been found mainly in returnees. The country now has 149 confirmed Covid-19 cases including 28 recoveries and four deaths.

Health experts have since called on the government to re-examine the lockdown measures and scale-up screening and testing, so as to save the country from sliding into a catastrophic health disaster, especially considering the country's already limping health sector.
