Malinga calls for urgent food aid in Matabeleland North

A national food security watchdog has called for an urgent food aid intervention in the drought stricken Matabeleland North Province.

Addressing journalist in Bulawayo on Friday, Eye on Food Security Zimbabwe Chairman Busani Malinga pleaded with stakeholders to head the cries coming from Matabeleland North.

Said Malinga, "We urge all concerned stakeholders to ensure that vulnerable areas such as Matebeleland North are prioritized in the distribution of the subsidized maize meal.

"Eye on Food Security is concerned by the reports of maize meal shortages in Matebeleland North and we ask all players, distributors and GMAZ to hear the cry of the people of Matebeleland North and ensure that they are not left behind in the distribution of the subsidy maize meal."

Malinga further called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to declare the food security situation in Zimbabwe a national disaster.

"We would like to urge the government of President ED Mnangagwa to declare the food security situation in Zimbabwe a national disaster so that the nation can unlock funds and support to get affordable food to the people of Zimbabwe."

Turning to attacks on Innscor by some politicians, Malinga said, "We duly note the attack by some individuals and politicians on National Foods and subsequently the entire innscor group. We urge our society to understand that we need to work together to ensure that our people have access to affordable food , grain while ensuring that entities such as National Foods are able to pay salaries and meet their obligations while profitably servicing the needs of the market."

Recently the Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Zimvac) said about 5,5 million people in the country's rural areas are food insecure with Matabeleland North among the worst affected provinces, latest report has revealed.

The report said Government should expedite providing food aid to vulnerable communities as most of them have run out of food.

Matabeleland North and Masvingo provinces which are the worst affected provinces have an estimated 63 percent of their population in need of food aid.
