SUSPENDED NetOne chief executive Lazarus Muchenje and his alleged accomplices yesterday suffered an initial setback after a Harare magistrate threw out their application for refusal of remand.

Muchenje, 47, is jointly charged with interconnection and roaming manager Tawanda Sibanda, 49, acting chief finance officer Tinashe Severa, 43, chief technology officer Darlington Gutu, 53, chief operating officer Spencer Manguwa, 43, acting head of legal Tanyaradzwa Chingombe, 28, and legal trainee Shamaine Kadenhe, 29, on allegations of criminal abuse of office or alternatively contravening the Postal and Telecommunications Act.

Muchenje is also jointly charged with former NetOne non-executive director Paradzai Mutandwa Chakona, 56, for allegedly corruptly entering a lease agreement of a NetOne house without board approval.

Through their lawyers, they had applied for refusal of remand, arguing they were wrongly charged as they were not public officials.

The State said their application was water under the bridge as they had already been placed on remand and out on bail which the court agreed on in dismissing the application.
