A TRUCK driver with a Chitungwiza logistic company, a businessman and clearing agent have appeared in court charged with smuggling property worth R900 223,02 through the Beitbridge Border Post, prejudicing the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) of over $2 754 467,36 and US$4 241,56 in duty.

Rayson Kakono (42), a truck driver with the NM Logistics, Stephen Zvinavashe (42) a Beitbridge businessman and Ranganai Nhungunira (39) employed by Swiss Global (Private) Ltd as a clearing agent pleaded not guilty to contravening section 182 of the Customs and Excise Act Chapter 20:03 (smuggling) charge when they appeared before Beitbridge magistrate Toindepi Zhou on Wednesday.

They were granted $20 000 bail and remanded out of custody to July 15 for trial.

Prosecutor Munyonga Kuvarega told the court Nhungunira declared the goods as sodium chloride on the bill of entry.

Detectives deployed on anti-smuggling duties received a tip-off and intercepted the truck on its way to a truck stop, leading to Kakono's arrest. The detectives impounded the truck and Zimra confiscated the goods.

Kakono implicated Zvinavashe and Nhungunira, leading to their arrest.
