A tragic incident occurred in Hwedza South constituency on Wednesday, when Valentine Zinhumwe, a losing candidate from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), was reportedly involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of a cyclist.

The accident took place at Rapako Village 1, where Zinhumwe, who was allegedly driving the vehicle, struck Innocent Chitongo, a local cyclist. Chitongo was rushed to Mt St Mary’s Hospital but unfortunately passed away upon arrival. His burial is set to take place on Thursday.

Following the incident, there were allegations that Zinhumwe attempted to flee the scene, with some sources claiming that villagers blocked his vehicle in what appeared to be a potential hit-and-run attempt. However, Zinhumwe has denied these allegations, calling them "false and malicious."

In a brief statement, Zinhumwe confirmed the accident, stating that the matter is under police investigation. "The matter is currently under police investigation, and I would like to clarify that those allegations are false and malicious. For any further comment, I will refer you to my lawyer," he said.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that he had yet to receive a full report on the incident but indicated that investigations are ongoing.

As the local community mourns the loss of Innocent Chitongo, the case continues to draw attention, particularly regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt to leave the scene. The investigation is expected to clarify these details in the coming days.
