A 41-year-old man, Vhurumu Mutero, appeared before the Harare Magistrates' Court yesterday facing allegations of misappropriating US$125,000 entrusted to him for the purchase of a vehicle and household items.

Mutero was charged with theft of trust property and was granted bail of US$300 by Magistrate Ms. Apollonia Marutya. The case has been adjourned to January 14, 2025, for further proceedings.

Prosecutor Mr. Rufaro Chonzi stated that between February and July 2024, Mutero was entrusted with US$125,000 to acquire a Toyota single cab vehicle and various household items. However, instead of fulfilling his obligations, Mutero allegedly converted the funds to personal use.

The accused's actions reportedly left the complainant, whose identity has not been disclosed, at a significant financial loss.

The court instructed Mutero to adhere to bail conditions, which include reporting regularly to the police and refraining from interfering with witnesses.

If convicted, Mutero could face severe legal consequences for breaching the trust placed in him by the complainant. The case highlights the risks associated with entrusting significant amounts of money to individuals without proper safeguards.

Further developments in the case are awaited as the court continues its deliberations.
