A 33-year-old Mubaira man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping a 78-year-old woman at her homestead in Showani village, Mhondoro.
Prosper Nyere Makunde was convicted after pleading guilty when he appeared before Chivhu Regional Magistrate Tilda Mazhande.
The victim's identity has been withheld to protect her privacy.
The court heard that the incident occurred on August 26, 2026, at the elderly woman's homestead under Chief Rwizi.
Prosecutor Mike Coto told the court that Makunde arrived at the homestead at around 7pm and forced his way into the victim's bedroom by kicking open a locked door.
Once inside, Makunde allegedly grabbed the woman, pushed her onto her bed and raped her.
The victim screamed for help, prompting Makunde to flee from the scene.
Her cries attracted a neighbour who rushed to her assistance. The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to Makunde's arrest.
The court ultimately sentenced Makunde to 15 years' imprisonment following his conviction.
