Two Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) officials stationed at the Beitbridge border post have been arrested for importing luxury vehicles into Zimbabwe and declaring them as grapes to evade paying the prescribed vehicle importation duty.

According to police sources, the two officials Beni Mandiraira and William Mwashaireni have been charged with criminal abuse of office.

Among the vehicles that the duo allegedly imported using fraudulent means are four Toyota Fortuner and two Toyota Hilux vehicles.

In a statement conforming the arrest of the two, the police invited members of the public who might have information on the scam to approach their nearest police station.
It is believed that the arrest of the Zimra officials could open the lid into a bigger scandal involving senior officials at the revenue office and other security departments.

"Police in Beitbridge have arrested 2 ZIMRA officials for Criminal Abuse of Office in connection with fraudulent clearance of vehicles imported through the Beitbridge Border Post. The suspects would issue fake customs clearance certificates and the money for the said fake certificates cannot be accounted for. Members of the public with information on the scam can contact their nearest police station to assist with investigations," said the police in a statement.
