Mnangagwa fast-tracking genocide reburials is an insult to victims

Dear Editor

In the 1980's Mugabe, Mnangagwa and Perence Shiri butchered over 20 000 Ndebele speakers. Having an unrepentant architect of the Gukurahundi genocide (Mnangagwa) preside over the proceedings is beyond comprehension. It is insulting to the families of those that perished in the massacres and to the survivors is like throwing salt to the wounded.

Why is the chief architect and perpetrator of that genocide assuming the role of an overseer of this delicate and emotionally charged process? Can the perpetrator oversee justice to a crime he committed? A crime he refuses to apologise to? The only fast-track here should be an apology to his victim's families and survivors.

First, we need to know who did what and why. This amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity and the perpetrators should be brought to justice. Just exhuming and reburying the bodies is unjust. Mnangagwa led a brutal reign of terror in Matebeland and now he wants to act Superman. Truth first, reconciliation followed by reburials. He must be answerable to his heinous crimes first.
