MDC-T national secretary for local governance, Mr Sesil Zvidzai has accused MDC leader, Professor Welshman Ncube of failing to revitalise the country's industrial sector.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Gweru yesterday, Mr Zvidzai, who is also MDC-T candidate for Gweru urban constituency said Prof Ncube who was the Minister of Industry and Commerce failed to revive the industry for the five years he was in Government.
He cited Zisco Steel as one of the industries that Prof Ncube failed to revitalise. President Mugabe commissioned the US$750 million New Zim Steel (Pvt) Ltd in August 2011 but because of political bickering, operations are yet to resume.
The Mines and Mining Development and Industry and Commerce ministries have been blaming each other for the delays.
The Mines and Mining Development ministry has been pushing for the renegotiation of the Government-Essar deal, arguing that the new investor could not pay a paltry US$700 million for resources worth more than US$30 billion.
"We gave them (MDC) the ministry of Industry and Commerce but they failed to resuscitate the industry. They failed to reopen Zisco Steel. ZimAlloys could have long revived and started operating on full throttle. We want Zisco Steel to reopen.
"We would also want ZimAlloys to start operating on full capacity. We want our Bata of today to start operating on full throttle as well so that more people get employed. The responsible ministry in the inclusive Government failed to revive the giant industries that would have partially addressed issues of unemployment," he said.
