GENERATIONS, a South African soapie that has been on people's screens for a long time. It has been there from back in the 90s when it was screened on ZTV to the era of free to air decoders which used to pick up the signal from SABC 1 until they were cut off last year.
Viewers have since then made frantic efforts to catch a glimpse of the soapie's storyline. Pirate video vendors are making a killing by recording the episodes on a weekly basis and selling them for a dollar to the soapie's avid followers.
Characters like Sibusiso "Ngamla" Dlomo, Noluntu, Senzo, Jason, Queen Moroka, Mam' Rubi and Dineo have made watching the soapie worthwhile.
One such character making her way to Zimbabwe today is Khethiwe and is expected to be the centre of a cocktail party to be held at a local hotel.
Born Winnie Modise, Khethiwe (pictured) first appeared on set as a naive rural girl from Kwazulu Natal, who through determination got schooled and now has shares at Ezweni Advertising.
Her marriage to Khaphela (Mike Mvelase), a traditionalist who loved plants, ended when she got him killed through a mysterious bomb planted by Khuboni. Tonight, the Generations star makes a date with her Bulawayo fans - providing an opportunity to mix and mingle at a cocktail party.
Show organiser Terry Mubaiwa said local actors should not miss the opportunity to exchange notes with her.
"If there are local actors there they will be given preference to talk to Khethiwe. This is an opportunity for them to exchange notes with her on the different aspects of their careers," she said.
Mubaiwa said Khethiwe was jetting in today for the cocktail party dubbed One on One with Khethiwe.
"We paid for her tickets and we will go and pick her up at the airport tomorrow (today). Thereafter we will take her to the hotel where she will rest and wait for the show that is to be held in the evening," she said.
Mubaiwa said Khethiwe will sign autographs and get pictures taken with fans.
"There will be a time for photos and autographs with fans. She will also give a speech to the audience. But the whole essence of the programme is to get her to meet her fans in Zimbabwe," she said.
Local musician Nashie of the Imboko fame will provide the entertainment at the event. He said fans should watch out for new tracks and old ones as well.
Another television star from the same soapie Senzo made a date with Bulawayo fans at Club 40 in November last year.
