A MATSHOBANE suburb disk jockey (29) got more than he bargained for after he went to negotiate a payment for a gig at night, when his prospective employer's boyfriend allegedly stabbed him with a screwdriver in a jealous rage.
Hloniphani Khumalo (28) had been promised a job as a DJ by Nomathemba Ndlovu, but his decision to go and try to negotiate the deal at night almost cost his life as Ndlovu's lover, Vezinhlalo Sibanda, was angered by another man was looking for his girlfriend late at night.
Sibanda appeared before Western Commonage provincial magistrate Willard Mafios Moyo, where he was charged for contravening Section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
He pleaded not guilty to the allegations and was further remanded in custody to January 30 for trial continuation.
In his defence, Sibanda said he remembered the fight, but did not stab Khumalo with a screwdriver.
"We had a misunderstanding, but I did not stab him using a screwdriver all over the body," he said.
"He came to a party looking for my girlfriend and we fought."
Prosecutor Mufaro Mageza told the court that the two allegedly met at around 10pm at a party at Matshobana suburb on New Year's Eve.
Khumalo asked to see Ndlovu, but Sibanda would have none of it.
Sibanda got furious when he heard that his girlfriend, Ndlovu, was being sought by another man at that time of the night.
He looked for Sibanda and stabbed him once in the stomach, once in the throat and two times in the head.
Khumalo fell down with blood gushing from his body and Sibanda, in the company of his friends, fled the scene.
Khumalo was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he was admitted and is still being treated.
According to the police report, Khumalo was hired by Ndlovu to DJ at her party, however, he looked for her during the night to negotiate payment terms, before the insecure boyfriend interfered and stabbed him.
Monalisa Sibanda, a witness, said that Sibanda came to her asking if she had seen the DJ and later learnt Khumalo had been stabbed.
