HE is little known in Bulawayo, yet big in South Africa.
DJ Mqondisi ‘Skaiva' Sibanda has had his efforts recognised as one of his house music tracks was nominated for the prestigious Metro FM awards that are set for later this month at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban ICC.
The hit track Sweet Jesus that featured in South Africa's DJ QT' s album Quantized 7 is causing waves in South Africa and no doubt it is the best soulful house track at the moment, topping the charts in most radio stations in South Africa.
"I was glad to hear that QT'S album was nominated for the Metro FM awards in South Africa. One of the best tracks in the album is mine and it has been topping charts in most of South Africa's radio stations. I managed to collaborate with QT and we produced a hit song," he said.
The fourth year Lupane State University Geography student said they do not have a fan base in Bulawayo and lamented the lack of support from locals who are failing to recognise talented house music producers.
However, this has forced him to seek greener pastures and get bookings in South Africa and Harare where they play their music in an endeavour to get recognition from fans, something that has seen him shoot to stardom and be nominated for the Metro FM awards.
"We do not have much support in Bulawayo that is the reason why we get to play in South Africa and Harare. Other than that we play at private functions," he said.
His road to fame in the South African music market was successful when he was introduced to QT by his close friend based in the United Kingdom.
In an endeavour to increase his fan base, Skaiva and Defined House will embark on tours to High Schools and Universities were they will host community building workshops.
"I met QT thru a friend of mine and we managed to collaborate on that hit song, Sweet Jesus and he contacted us. We are hoping to hold workshops with local universities and schools so that we increase our fan base in Bulawayo" he said.
Skaiva is also part of the House Rebels group that is famed for the famous Godobori track. He has also collaborated with Soul Candy Records on a track.
