Zim set to host Hip-hop music awards

Zimbabwe is set to host its first ever Hip-hop music awards, the Zimbojam.com reported on Thursday.
According to the entertainment website since the early 90's, Hip-hop music has won the hearts of many in Zimbabwe. It is difficult to credit one individual for pioneering Hip-hop music in Zimbabwe. Early trail-blazers in the Zimbabwean Hip-hop scene include Bless, one of the first hip-hop artists to have his video Freedom Vibe screened on ZTV. Everyone also remembers when Mau Mau sent shockwaves in the charts when he released his iconic song Who is the Mau?
The list is endless because behind the scenes there are producers, beat makers and sponsors whose contributions to hip-hop are just as valuable as the singers. With this in mind it was realised that a void still remained to be filled - our local hip-hop music is yet to be celebrated. Since the early 90's, these creative individuals have never received accolades for their work and the time is ripe for the inaugural ZIM Hip-Hop Awards.
The definition of hip-hop has always been clear - the hip-hop culture is hinged on four elements; deejaying, dancing, rapping and graffiti. It was with this definition that the ZIM Hip-hop Unleashed magazine has tried to determine which artists should be nominated for this year's ZIM Hip-hop Awards.
ZIM Hip-hop Unleashed in its awards has deliberately left out graffiti from the categories considered for nomination because of legal implications. Graffiti has not yet reached a level of acceptance in our community to afford us nominees who would be willing to be identified.
Thus because only 3 aspects of hip-hop will be considered for the award, the logo is made up of 3 radio speakers and the colours that represent the Zimbabwe flag. The colours represent the nominees who have been selected based on one common point of reference, which is all the artists are Zimbabwean nationals.
Nominations for the awards are based on the 2011 hip-hop material released to Z.B.H (radio & television). This determination may exclude some players in the industry; however, we believe this can encourage hip-hop artists to take hip-hop to the people.
This awards event will not reflect the work of artists who have not released their work but artists who have strived to keep hip-hop relevant on our airwaves. These artists, these nominees are our true heroes - each directly or indirectly fanning the hip-hop flame in Zimbabwe. ZIM Hip-hop Unleashed salutes these individuals and celebrates their work through these Awards.
The ZIM Hip-hop Unleashed Awards 2011 will be held in December in Harare at a venue to be announced. But you can still vote for your favourite artists on the Facebook page: Hip-hop Unleashed OR email on zimhiphopunleashed@yahoo.com
