Man bites into battery while eating pizza

Johannesburg - A Vanderbijlpark man lost a tooth when he bit into a battery while eating a pizza from Debonairs.

Translator Kyle Robertson told Beeld he felt a white-hot pain shooting through his head and heard his tooth crack. He then saw he'd bitten into a small, round battery - the kind that would usually fit into a watch.

He was eating a sweet-and-sour chicken pizza with extra mozzarella from Debonairs in Randburg.

"I pulled off the cheese, the tastiest part of the pizza, and bit into it. One piece of cheese felt heavier than the rest but I didn't pay attention to it and thought it was a bit of chicken or something.

"Afterwards I saw something like battery acid running from the battery but it didn't burn me. It was a funny taste but I didn't really taste anything when I bit into it."

Damage to the tooth cost him R3 496.60 and he had to have root canal. A crown will be fitted this week.

Compensation

A furious Robertson wants Debonairs to compensate him for his medical expenses, and complains that they are ignoring him.

The chain restaurant responded, saying they were busy with an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and that Robertson's medical costs would be paid if the restaurant was at fault.

But the restaurant owner said he put a battery into a pizza and then into the pizza oven as an experiment and it had exploded - the ovens reach temperatures of 300°C.

Robertson denied putting the battery into the pizza himself.

"Why would I put myself through all this pain and suffering? I also didn't have the sore tooth and then decided to claim from Debonairs."

He said he was prepared to take Debonairs to court.
