JOHANNESBURG - Six international delegates attending the Pan-African Conference in Midrand, Johannesburg were robbed at gunpoint on Friday.
The group had just landed in Johannesburg, ready to discuss conflict resolution and brainstorm ways of dealing with conflict in Africa.
The six were in a taxi outside their hotel in Midrand, when two armed men allegedly confronted them as they were trying to enter the premises through a security boom.
"When we were at the gate ... I opened the window, and then there were two guys pulling a gun at my driver's side," taxi driver Thandazani Mabuza said.
"They took the key for the car; then they said 'Where is money, where is cellphones?' Then they started to search everyone in the car."
Mabuza says no one was hurt, but the suspects made off with the delegates' hand luggage – which contained cash, cellphones, iPads and passports.
Police are investigating a charge of armed robbery.
While they have access to CCTV footage of the incident, the suspects' faces are not clearly visible.
