A FAMILY from Tembisa, east of Joburg, is fuming after an old relative of theirs was allegedly mistreated by Tembisa Hospital staff.

According to Daily Sun the family said Andrew Toka (61) went to the hospitalbecause of his headaches, but came home with more problems.

Nurses allegedly forgot to remove a catheter tube which was still sticking out of his penis.

And a health spokesman admitted that the nurses forgot to remove the catheter!

Julie Mogapi (52) - who has been looking after Andrew - said her shy relative came back from the hospital last week and isolated himself.

"We became suspicious when we saw that wherever he sat it was wet.

"We didn't know what was happening and took him to a private doctor who discovered that Andrew still had a pipe inserted through his penis to his bladder.

"He had a bloody discharge and couldn't control his bladder. He looked sad and in pain.

"He has always kept to himself and never communicated with anyone about his problems," Julie said

She said the doctor gave him some pills and an injection which they hope will help him recover.

Julie said the family was very unhappy with the way Andrew had been treated.

"We want to know why doctors inserted the catheter in his penis. All we know is that he went to hospital because of his headaches," said Julie.

The family said they planned to lay charges against the hospital officials who caused Andrew such pain.

Gauteng Department of Health spokesman Steve Mabona said an "indwelling catheter" was used because the patient was confused and wetting himself, and also to prevent pressure sores.

"We suspect that the patient removed the bag himself due to his mental state," he said.

Mabona said when Andrew was discharged, nurses forgot to remove the catheter tip, adding that the matter would be addressed with the nurses concerned and corrective measures implemented.

"The hospital's quality assurance staff and the treating doctor met with the family and patient on Wednesday to explain the reason for the catheter," said Mabona.
