A Kanye man who allegedly tried to rape a pensioner has been remanded in custody after he was charged with attempted rape.
The Voice reported that on the fateful night, 25-year old Tshepo Wasetso allegedly assaulted and molested the 77-year-old grandmother before she overpowered him and screamed for help
The alleged incident took place late on Sunday 28 February in Lotlhakane West, where the old lady lives with her family.
Wasetso initially managed to escape the scene of his purported crime and was only apprehended last Wednesday, after the victim's children launched an extensive manhunt and found him in Kanye, before handing him in to the police.
Wasetso had approached the family seeking work as a herdboy, but they would not hire him as he did not have his identity card.
The old woman advised Wasetso to come back with the identity card, but seeing that it was very late, she took pity on the young man and offered him a place to stay in one of her houses, sharing a room with her grandson.
The old woman said she awoke in the night after something disturbed, to find Wasetso leering above her bed, holding an axe.
"When I opened my eyes, he immediately put his hand inside my mouth. I struggled for a long time pulling his hand out of my mouth. He scratched my private parts with his nails and told me that he wanted to have sex," she said.
"I managed to escape from his grip and screamed for help before he escaped. I then rushed to the house where my grandson was sleeping and discovered that the front-door was tied with a rope, preventing him from coming to my rescue," she continued.
Superintendent, Onneetse Gagogosha of Kanye police, commended the old lady's children for their help in the arrest of the suspect.
If convicted, Supt. Gagogosha says, Wasetso faces a minimum of ten years imprisonment.
