A 27-year-old man from Epworth has been convicted of causing the death of another man following a quarrel during a drinking session at a local shebeen.

Simbarashe Maukazuva (27) was found guilty of culpable homicide by Harare regional magistrate Lois Mukunyadze on Friday.

Maukazuva had pleaded not guilty to the charge during the trial.

Prosecutor Vimbiso Rundare informed the court that on October 4, 2020, Lovemore Muchechetere (the deceased) was drinking beer with his friend Tapiwa Masuka at a local shebeen.

Muchechetere and Masuka decided to head home and encountered Maukazuva along the way.

The court heard that the two exchanged harsh words with Maukazuva, leading to a fistfight.

During the altercation, Maukazuva slapped Muchechetere in the face, causing him to fall headfirst onto a stone.

Muchechetere was rushed to a local medical facility, bleeding profusely from the head.

He died the following day, with the postmortem report attributing his death to severe brain damage and multiple skull fractures.
