List of 22 Zimbabweans awarded scholarships to study at UK and SA varsities

Canon Collins Trust released its list of scholars who have been awarded scholarships to study at UK and SA universities for the academic year 2013. The Canon Collins Trust offers scholarships for students pursuing full- or part-time study toward an Honours, Masters, or Ph.D. degree in any university in South Africa.

Scholarships provide up to R40,000 of support for one year for SA studying and will be considered for study in any subject.

Canon Collins Trust offers full tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a return economy flight, a settling-in allowance and other support whilst in the UK.

Canon Collins Trust does not currently fund PhD study in the UK; however it act as a nominating agency for Commonwealth Scholarships.

Keith Mudadi is the only scholar from Zimbabwe was awarded a scholarship to study at a UK university. 21 scholars were awarded scholarships to study at SA universities.

Keith has a degree in Economics from the University of Zimbabwe and works at the Ministry of Mining Development. Upon his return to Zimbabwe he intends to work on initiatives to integrate communities around mines into the economy, as well as exploring ways to mobilise foreign di-rect investment into the mining sector.

Wisdom specialises in epidemiology. He previously worked at the Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research at the University of Cape Town.


Pamhidzayi Berejena Mhongera

PhD Social Work
Pamhidzayi's research focuses on orphaned and vulnerable girls and their transition out of insti-tutional care in Zimbabwe. She works in microfinance and recently completed a visiting fellow-ship at the Brookings Institute in Washington DC.

Wendy is exploring how drama can be used for education and community development. Prior to taking up postgraduate study she worked as a Programmes Officer at Patsimeredu Edutain-ment Trust.

Caiphas' focus is human rights law in relation to trade and the extractive industries. Prior to tak-ing up postgraduate study he taught at North-West University.

Sikhulumile is conducting an analysis of agriculture recovery policies, and their relevance to ru-ral Zimbabwean communities.

Dumisani is focusing on reconciliation and conflict transformation in Zimbabwe. He is co-founder and Executive Director of a peace-building organisation called Grace to Heal.

Hloniphani is researching the role of ICT in the development and intellectualisation of African languages in higher education. He previously worked at the University of the KwaZulu-Natal.

Thamsanqa is studying the development of clean technology for mineral processing opera-tions in southern Africa. He completed his BSc in Chemical Engineering in Havana, Cuba.

Prisca's research is in the field of labour law, focusing on the legal requirements of a protected strike as a limitation to industrial democracy. She was previously a legal advisor at Lawyer's Voice in Durban.

Sibonginkosi is studying HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health, focusing particularly on female genital cutting and sexual behaviour.

Faith is focusing her research on gender and the nation in Zimbabwean women's literature. Prior to starting her PhD she worked at Solusi University in Zimbabwe.

Sibonginkosi is focusing her studies on maternal and infant health in relation to HIV/AIDS and lack of access to adequate water and sanitation. She works at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Re-search (CSIR) in Pretoria.

Nyasha is conducting interviews with Zimbabwean families in South Africa to preserve undocument-ed stories of foreign nationals. She hopes her research will inform legal frameworks and diversify voic-es on the subject of immigrant identities.
