20 Zimbabweans receive Chevening scholarships

Some 20 Zimbabweans will soon to leave for the United Kingdom to study in various fields after being awarded Chevening Scholarships by the British embassy in Harare.
Britain this year increased the scholarship awards five-fold from four to 20 for the 2015/6 study period.
Speaking at the send- off reception, UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe Catriona Laing described the increase as part of the confidence building measures with Zimbabwe.
"The scholarship programme is a demonstration of the UK's commitment to Zimbabwe's human resource and to its future.
"In offering this prestigious scholarship, the UK is playing a role in ensuring that Zimbabweans have skills and knowledge to contribute to their country's development," she said.
The Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with strong academic backgrounds who also have demonstrable leadership potential.
The scholarship offers financial support to study for a taught master's degree at any of the UK's leading universities and the opportunity to become part of an influential global network of 44 000 alumni.
The 20 scholarships were awarded in actuarial science, media management, international law, sustainable development, public health, sustainable agriculture, engineering business management, tropical medicine, regional and urban planning, financial economics, international development, business administration and multimedia journalism, among other subjects.
The students are expected to return to Zimbabwe upon completion of their qualification to make a meaningful contribution to developing the country and become part of the global Chevening alumni.
The success of the Chevening Scholarship in Zimbabwe is evident, with former scholars now in places of influence including George Charamba - Presidential Spokesperson; Supa Mandiwanzira - ICT minister, Barclays Bank CEO George Guvamatanga; human rights lawyer Chris Mhike and Raphael Chikukwa - chief curator of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe among many other leaders in government, private and civil sector.
There are approximately 1 500 Chevening shcolarships on offer globally for the 2016/7 academic cycle.
Chevening began in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international awards scheme.
Chevening scholars come from over 160 countries and territories worldwide and over 1 500 scholarships were awarded in 2015/6.
