United States Ambassador Harry K. Thomas Jr, government officials and National University of Science and Technology (NUST) officials on November 16 witnessed the official launch of the NUST American Space in Bulawayo.
"We are excited to launch the NUST American Space after two years of work on the project," said David McGuire, Public Affairs Officer. "The center represents a revived platform to connect members of the Bulawayo community interested in the United States and we hope this gesture benefits the people of Bulawayo and the region including Lupane State University, Solusi University, the Bulawayo Polytechnic, and the Catholic University."
Refurbishment work estimated at $274,000 has gone into the space, located at the NUST Technopark in central Bulawayo on Jason Moyo. The new space will replace the American Corner Bulawayo, previously located at the Bulawayo Public Library. The new space houses a computer lab, a conference room, a large presentation room, an education advising center, and a small meeting room.
McGuire said the new space will provide year-round programming around four core areas: educational advising for students interested in American universities and colleges, cultural programs, alumni programs, and information about the United States. It will also host U.S. college fairs, innovative online courses, as well as public discussion seminars to enhance U.S.- Zimbabwe bilateral relations.
The U.S. Embassy has four American Spaces in Zimbabwe, providing access to the latest, in-depth information about the United States and connecting Americans and Zimbabweans in engaging conversations about U.S. policy, society, and values. Other spaces include the American Corners in Mutare's Turner Memorial Library and in the Gweru Memorial Library, and the Information Resource Center based at the U.S. Embassy's Eastgate offices in Harare.
