From connectivity to care: Minister Muchinguri hails NetOne's healthcare drive in Mutasa

MUTASA, MANICALAND - Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri has applauded NetOne's efforts to improve healthcare access in rural communities through the company's NetOne @30 Medical Outreach Initiative, describing the programme as a valuable contribution to Zimbabwe's national development agenda.
The initiative, implemented in partnership with ZimSmart Villages, recently brought healthcare services closer to communities in Mutasa District as part of NetOne's Health & Care pillar commemorating the mobile network operator's 30th anniversary.
For many rural families, access to healthcare can mean the difference between prolonged suffering and timely medical intervention. The outreach seeks to bridge that gap by delivering essential health services directly to communities.
The programme forms part of a nationwide campaign targeting 30 districts and approximately 90,000 households, with an estimated 3,000 households set to benefit in each district.
Muchinguri, who attended the outreach alongside Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Advocate Misheck Mugadza, commended NetOne for placing communities at the centre of its anniversary celebrations.
She said initiatives that bring essential services closer to people complement the country's aspirations under Vision 2030 and the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).
"As we pursue the aspirations of Vision 2030 and implement the National Development Strategy 2, we must continue to harness innovation, technology and partnerships to improve the quality of life of our people. Healthcare is fundamental to development because healthy communities are better positioned to participate meaningfully in the social and economic development of our country," said Muchinguri.
The minister also praised collaboration between Government, private sector organisations and development partners in advancing community development and improving service delivery.
NetOne said its healthcare outreach programme is designed to ensure the company's 30th anniversary celebrations leave a lasting social impact across Zimbabwe.
Speaking on behalf of NetOne, Public Relations Manager Ernest Magadzire said the company wanted its legacy of connectivity to extend beyond communication services.
"For 30 years, NetOne has connected Zimbabweans. As we celebrate this milestone, we want connectivity to mean more than communication. We want it to connect people to healthcare, information, opportunity and essential services, especially in communities that need them most," said Magadzire.
He added that the Mutasa outreach demonstrated how technology and community partnerships can improve lives, particularly in underserved areas.
"When a mother can access healthcare closer to home, when a child receives care, when a family receives information that can protect their health, that is connectivity making a difference. That is what we mean when we say we want to go beyond connectivity."
ZimSmart Villages Chief Operations Officer Tawanda Njerere said the initiative highlights the role technology can play in overcoming geographical barriers that often prevent rural communities from accessing healthcare services.
"Technology only becomes meaningful when it solves a real problem for people. Through our collaboration with NetOne, we are using connectivity as a bridge between rural communities and healthcare professionals, helping bring healthcare closer to the people," he said.
The partnership is also supporting the use of telemedicine and digital health solutions to improve access to medical services while reducing travel burdens for rural residents.
As NetOne celebrates three decades of connecting Zimbabweans, the company says its focus is increasingly shifting towards translating connectivity into social impact, opportunity and improved quality of life.
The Mutasa outreach contributes towards Vision 2030, NDS2 and key Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being, SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
For beneficiaries in Mutasa, however, the impact was felt less through statistics and more through the reassurance that healthcare services had been brought closer to home.
