Last night, Monday, 30 September, the immensely talented, singer-songwriter Alun Parry lent his voice to calls for Evenia Mawongera's release.
Evenia, an outspoken critic of President Robert Mugabe, is currently being held at Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre pending deportation to Zimbabwe.
For the past 10 years, Evenia has been living in Leicester with her daughters and grandchildren, all of whom are British citizens.
She is one of the people who performed for The Queen when she came to Leicester in June 2012 to mark the start of her Diamond Jubilee tour.
In August this year, Evenia received a special commendation in the Good Neighbour Awards in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the community.
The Home Office wants to deport her to Zimbabwe where she will be at risk of persecution, extremely serious ill-treatment and death at the hands of agents and supporters of the Mugabe regime.
Alun Parry is staging a series of performances in Leicester to as part of events to mark Everybody's Reading 2013. He gave the rendition of "I Want Evenia To Stay" during a performance at The Donkey Pub. "I Want Evenia To Stay" is an adoptation of Parry's song, "I Want Rosa To Stay" from the album, "Corridors of Stone".
Parry's next performance will be at The Musician at 7.30pm tonight where he is appearing, supported by The Red Leicester Choir, again as part of events to mark Everybody's Reading 2013.
