A Bulawayo prominent lawyer Matshobana Ncube has quashed the Chronicle report in which he is quoted as saying the commission of inquiry appointed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa was in proper composition and well positioned.
In a a Facebook post, Ncube said he was setting the Record Straight.
"The Chronicle newspaper on Friday, the 31st August 2018, distorted what i said about the Commission of Inquiry appointed by President Mnangagwa. I was asked if the commission was going to be effective. I pointed out that the Commission's terms of reference were rather hazy vis-a-vis what happened," he said.
"I pointed out that there were two problems that presented the commission in that In one of the terms of the reference, they were supposed to account for the perpetrators of violence and those who are supposed to have destroyed property, the accused in that regard were before a court of law on remand, the commission's power in that regard to have jurisdiction over them was rather suspect."
"The terms of reference didnot deal with the issue of those that died which really was the troublesome issue. I pointed out that the relatives of the deceased needed closure in knowing why their relatives died in those circumstances."
He said he expressed my misgivings about the qualification of Charity Manyeruke's qualification to be on that commission and pointed out that the others were eminent individuals who should do their work professionally and that perhaps the open ended terms of reference for them to attend to any other issues will make them effective.
"In essence time will tell if this commission will be of value. The Chronicle unfortunately decided to twist and distort my views to something else," he said.
