Human trafficking Zimbabwe cop faces probe

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched an internal investigation against a Chirundu-based officer who is facing a charge of human trafficking, NewsDay has gathered.
Paul Chaza was recently granted bail by the High Court in Chinhoyi after Karoi magistrate, Jessie Kufa, denied him bail saying the State has a strong case against him.
According to sources, Kariba-based officers are investigating the case pending a disciplinary hearing on Chaza.
"An internal process kicked off last week and investigations are underway. Those assigned to investigate the matter are police officers in Kariba where the matter has been referred for professional reasons," a source told NewsDay yesterday.
Other sources also revealed that some State witnesses have been summoned to help with the investigations.
"The investigating team will engage State witnesses so that they gather enough evidence for the hearing on Chaza whose action and conduct has put the police force operations into disrepute," the sources said.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi was not reachable at the time of going to print.
He is, however, on record saying Chaza's case will be investigated fully.
Kufa denied Chaza bail saying that he may interfere with State witnesses. Chaza is being charge together with Handiseni Mapiki (34) of Nyamakate village 24B, Chief Chundu, Hurungwe, Karoi.
The duo is being charged for contravening sections of the Trafficking in Persons Act or alternatively sections of the Immigration Act.
According to prosecutor Pazvi Munakira, Chaza and Mapiki acted in connivance and facilitated the illegal entry of 10 Ethiopian nationals in the country without travel documents. The Ethiopians were en route to South Africa.
