Bulawayo's Mayor, David Coltart, has called for a review of the contract with Terracotta Private Limited, the contractor for the Egodini Mall project. The project, which began in 2012, has faced significant delays, with the bus terminus and vendor's market still incomplete.
The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) engaged Terracotta to develop Egodini Mall in 2015, but eight years later, the project remains unfinished. Mayor Coltart expressed his intention to meet with the council's legal team to better understand the complexities of the contract and explore possible solutions.
He emphasized the importance of completing the project for decongesting the city and resolving various urban issues. The BCC has been under pressure from residents and stakeholders to expedite the project's completion, which has caused frustration among residents.
Some residents have raised concerns about potential mismanagement of project funds, while others believe the contractor should not be granted additional extensions for missed deadlines. Terracotta, the South African property developer, has failed to meet its deadlines for the various phases of the Egodini Mall project, including providing space for informal traders and commuter omnibus operators.
Efforts to reach Terracotta director Thulani Moyo for comment were unsuccessful, as his contact number was unreachable, and he did not respond to questions sent to his mobile number.
