Suspended National Social Security Authority (Nssa) director David Makwara was acquitted of fraud charges involving US$182,661.
Harare Magistrate Donald Ndirowei ruled that the housing renovation deal, which was the basis of the fraud accusation, was conducted properly.
Makwara, represented by George Manokore, was accused of misrepresenting to Nssa that Zivo Project Management intended to carry out renovations worth US$182,661.
The allegations stated that Makwara obtained a quotation from Nigel Mahachi, the project manager at Zivo, which led to Nssa transferring the funds to Zivo's bank account. It was claimed that Makwara then directed Mahachi to return the money to him.
The prosecution also alleged that Zivo transferred US$171,600 to Mashwede Diesel Services to obtain US$165,000 in cash, and in June 2022, Makwara instructed Mahachi to add 15 items to the renovation bill to cover up the alleged crime. However, the court found no evidence of wrongdoing, leading to Makwara's acquittal.
