A man from Beitbridge has been sentenced to nine months in jail for allegedly stealing a boer goat belonging to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS).
Wellington Mukonde (39) pleaded guilty to stock theft before a Beitbridge Magistrate on Monday.
Additionally, the court found that Mukonde had a suspended sentence due to a prior criminal record, resulting in a total of one year in prison after the reinstatement of his three-month suspended sentence.
According to the State's case, on May 26, an inmate tasked with herding 135 goats in the Dulibadzimu grazing area discovered that one boer goat was missing around 4pm. The inmate reported the incident to a ZPCS official.
Subsequently, on May 27, a ZPCS officer observed Mukonde selling goat meat and, upon questioning, Mukonde failed to provide a satisfactory explanation, leading to his arrest.
