President Emmerson Mnangagwa has subtly acknowledged internal conflicts within his Zanu-PF party, particularly over his potential bid for a third presidential term.
Discord has arisen from unilateral decisions by Mnangagwa, including replacing Mike Bimha with Munyaradzi Machacha as national political commissar.
Mnangagwa's ambitions face resistance from Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who is seen as a strong contender for the presidency.
Following a Zanu-PF Politburo meeting, Mnangagwa addressed the unrest, urging party unity and cautioning against factionalism.
His comments were perceived as a direct message to Chiwenga and former War Veterans Affairs minister Christopher Mutsvangwa, both of whom are vying to succeed him.
Chiwenga and Mutsvangwa argue their roles in ousting former President Robert Mugabe entitle them to leadership, with Mutsvangwa also citing his seniority from the liberation war.
