A self‑proclaimed prophet in Bulawayo has appeared in court after he allegedly raped a 19‑year‑old girl under the guise of conducting an exorcism.
Nkosilathi Dube appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Shingirai Mutiro, who remanded him in custody to 18 August.
The State alleged that on 11 August, Dube met the complainant at City Hall in Bulawayo and told her he wanted to pray for her at his house. Upon arrival, he reportedly began praying while holding her stomach.
Dube allegedly told the teenager that she was barren and needed to have unprotected sex with him so that he could “cleanse” her. He then forced himself on her before releasing her.
A police report was filed, leading to his arrest. The matter is proceeding under Zimbabwe’s sexual offences laws.
