Following concerns that Bulawayo City had only three month's burial space available, the city fathers say they have identified new burial space near Pumula South and people can 'relax and feel free to die'.
On Wednesday, in a full council meeting and answering questions from councillors after a Health Housing and Education report was tabled, Ward 27 councillor Siboniso Khumalo assured councillors that a new gravesite had been prepared.
"We are left with about three months' burial space, have we identified anywhere where we will fall on after we run out of burial space?," Clr Chigora asked.
In response Khumalo said: "We have organised with my committee, a place in Pumula South that will be used as a grave site. The place has been prepared and is waiting so you can 'relax and feel free to die'."
The new gravesite was previously a piece of land awarded to a Bulawayo land developer, Hawkflight Construction, but it was later agreed that the company be given alternative land.
Bulawayo currently has seven cemetery sites, namely, Old Luveve, Luveve Extension, Luveve 3, Hyde Park, West Park, Lady Stanley and Athlone Avenue but with a death rate of about 400 people per month, the graveyards are fast filling up.
The local authority has also urged residents to try cremation as an option of disposing of their loved ones but with no success.
Current statistics indicate that only about eight to eleven people are cremated every month.
