SOUTH African Afro Jazz music icon Ringo Madlingozi's "bling-bling" was reportedly stolen last month at a local hotel, after a performance in the city, it has been learnt.
Ringo was booked at Holiday Inn in Bulawayo, where his watch, a diesel brand and gold chain are said to have been stolen. No police report or complaint was filed.
The watch has however since been recovered, raising questions over the security and credibility of the hotel.
A comment from the hotel could not be obtained, as they referred this reporter to the head office in Harare.
Some Holiday Inn Harare management staff also declined to comment on the issue, stating that they were not at liberty to talk to the press.
Groove Entertainment director Nkululeko Sibanda, the promoter of the show where Ringo performed confirmed that Ringo's jewellery had indeed been stolen at the hotel.
"His watch and neck chain were stolen but surprisingly his watch has since been recovered. The question is how is it that only after some days the watch was found but not the chain.
"I took him (Ringo) from the hotel to the airport, as he was returning to South Africa. He then phoned me 10 minutes later, informing me that he had forgotten his jewellery at the hotel. He said he had left the watch and chain on the bed side table," said Sibanda.
He noted that soon after the call he drove to the hotel, where he informed the management at the front office.
"They said they couldn't find his jewellery. We went to search for the items together with the staff and indeed there was nothing. After a few days they then called me informing me that they had found the watch. They said they found the watch after they checked with the cleaners, which means the cleaners must have taken the chain," he said.
Sibanda added that he signed for the watch, which is still in his possession, stating that Ringo insisted that he wanted his jewellery.
"I really don't know how to explain this to him. It's been almost a month and I need to hand over the watch and chain. But the chain is still missing," he said.
Ringo was in Bulawayo on Valentine's Day for a show where he was billed to perform alongside Oliver Mtukudzi.
He however gave a solo performance, after Tuku called in sick at the last minute.
