A WOMAN from Hillside suburb in Bulawayo was savagely bashed by her drunken husband for slaughtering one of their chickens during his absence.
For the offence of thumping his wife, Rachael Nhunduru, the alleged basher, Aleck Nyamugere, was yesterday brought before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Ndumo Masuku charged with a crime of physical abuse as defined in Section (1) (a) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16.
Accusations against Nyamugere,as read by prosecutor Mr Malvern Nzombe, are that he left the house after his wife had reportedly asked for some money to buy vegetables.
The court heard that the accused told his wife that he was coming back soon.
The accused who was going for a beer drink did not come back home until the following morning and the complainant who had nothing to cook as relish decided to slaughter one of their chickens.
Nyamugere who was boozing the whole night is reported to have come back home at around 3am in a drunken stupor.
After taking a nap, the accused reportedly woke up.
The court further heard that Nyamugere then asked Nhunduru why she had slaughtered their chicken during his absence and the complainant told him that she had slaughtered it since she had nothing to cook as relish the previous night.
The accused was infuriated with the complainant's response and as a result he was overcome with anger and immediately assaulted the complainant with fists on the face and head several times.
As a result of the thumping, she sustained a swollen face and head.
Asked by the magistrate why he committed such a crime, Nyamugere in a desperate bid to buy the lenience of the court said he was acting in self-defence since his wife was assaulting him for wearing her jersey and also after asking her why she did not allow him to sleep on their bed when he reported home.
Nyamugere was remanded out of custody on $20 bail.
