A SUSPECTED prostitute has been hospitalised after she was allegedly assaulted by a colleague over a client.

Ntombikayise Masina, 25, of Mahlathini Village was admitted to Inyathi District Hospital on Thursday after Lizwi Ngulube, 22, allegedly hit her with an empty beer bottle several times on the head.

Ngulube was arrested on the spot.

She appeared yesterday before Bulawayo magistrate Sheunesu Matova on circuit in Inyathi charged with assault.

Ngulube pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to November 20. The state opposed bail as her victim is still in hospital and her condition is not yet clear.

Ngulube told the court that she acted in self-defence and was protecting her interests as Masina had taken her "man".

"Your worship, the complainant is the one who provoked me by showing that she was interested in my client. She assaulted me and I fought back," said Ngulube.

Prosecuting, Lungisani Dube told the court that on Thursday at Senco Night Club at around 3AM, Ngulube used an empty beer bottle to hit her colleague on the head following a misunderstanding over a client.

"On November 5, Ngulube and Masina were arguing in the club over a client. The accused got angry and took an empty beer bottle and struck the complainant several times on the head," said the prosecutor.

Other patrons at the night club restrained the two as Masina bled from the head.

One patron called the police leading to Ngulube's arrest.
