A MAZDA 626 vehicle belonging to former Net-One Matabeleland regional manager, Douglas Mufunda, was reduced to a shell after it caught fire in a freak accident at a Bulawayo garage yesterday.

Mechanics watched helplessly as the fire consumed the car at Munyasa car alarms and sound systems along George Silundika and 8th Avenue.

The incident happened at about 10.30AM.

Scores of people gathered around the garage to catch a glimpse of the car as the flames consumed it.

Witnesses said it was fortunate that the fire did not damage other vehicles and no injuries were reported.

Mufunda, who was near the garage when the incident occurred, said the car caught fire while the mechanics were trying to jump start it. "I brought the car here a week ago for painting. It refused to start today and they decided to jumpstart it with another car.

"While they were jump starting the car, it ignited due to an electrical fault. The fire was uncontrollable and it reduced the car to nothing. Fortunately they managed to move away the other car," said Mufunda.

He said the car was insured.

The owner of the garage, Munyasa Chirambo, said he was shocked to see the car being reduced to a shell in just a few minutes.
