THE training for police officers in Zimbabwe is weird, a senior lawyer has said.

The lawyer, who requested anonymity for professional reasons, said this after reading a speech made by Commissioner Augustine Chihuri at a Passout Parade in Natbazinduna on Thursday this week.

In the speech, Com. Chihuri disclosed that there are 12 courses (among others) that cop recruits go through in order for them to graduate.

Com Chihuri did not mention which "others" he meant in his address.

These are: Police and Investigations, Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) , Police powers , Procedure and the law of Evidence, Foot and Arms Drill, Weapon Handling, First Aid, Public Oder and Disorder management, Human Rights and Use of Firearms, Political history of Zimbabwe, Community Policing, Basic Computer concepts and Basic Accounting.

"One really now understand why our police details have failed to crack serious offenses that committed. They have no capacity. For example, how basic is their accounting and computer knowledge determines how they deal with fraud cases.

"What human rights are these police officers learning since straight from Ntabazinduna training deport they start violating them full time?" asked the lawyer.

He added that it was " a public demand" that Com Chihuri should make known the real history syllabus that cops are being taught arguing that the country's history has been subjected to too much distortions.

"Com Chihuri must tell the nation about the history that our police details are taught. We are afraid that some facts of our history are being criminalized by police officers, so we want to know what they learn, otherwise the whole syllabus is weird," he said.

Many people have complained about distortions and omissions in the history of Zimbabwe – which have resulted in unlawful criminalization of public mentioning of some events that took place from 1980-1987.
