GEORGE Mkhwananzi who recently defected from the Dr Dumiso Dabengwa led Zapu to the Movement for Democratic Change formation led by Prime Minister Mr Morgan Tsvangirai was lured to defect by his long time friend Godern Moyo who promised him a "top post" in the party.
According to an MDC T legislator in Bulawayo who requested anonymity, Mkhananzi joined the MDC T at the behest and persuasion of Bulawayo province chairman Godern Moyo.
The two were together in Imbovane Yamahlabezulu and Zapu 2000.
Moyo, the former Zapu 2000 national secretary for information and publicity is also State Enterprises and Parastatals minister.
The source said Mkhwananzi was asked to join the MDC T during the time when Moyo had skirmishes with Matson Hlalo, over the chairmanship of the Province.
"He was then also promised a top position in the party and told to start familiarizing himself with people in Tsholotsho North where he comes from so that he can be a candidate there.
"Moyo then visited him Pretoria and they went shopping for some groceries. After that Mkhwananzi started making contacts with Kwanele (MDC T Johannesburg branch chairman) and attending meetings.
"He was introduced to us at Haffellis Coffee Shop by Moyo and had brilliant ideas about how to win the Matabeleland vote," said a source.
She added that the former Zapu 2000 national executive member and Imbovane Yamahlabezulu activist pledged to work closely with Ibhetshu LikaZulu to convince the people of Matabeleland to vote for PM Tsvangirai's party.
"Soon he is re-locating to Zimbabwe and we expect him to start bridging the gap between us and youth activists in the National Youth Development Trust (NYDT) and Ibhetshu LikaZulu. He said he can do so, if given all the support he needs," said the legislator.
Contacted for comment Ibhetshu LikaZulu secretary General Mbuso Fuzwayo said, "It appears George Mkhwanazi does not realize how people valued him, and how young people literally looked up to him.
"That is the extent of his irresponsibility. He cannot just turn around overnight and eat with the Devil, as youths we are worried about what he did and have withdrawn the respect we had for him, accordingly he shall face judgment like other sellouts," he said.
Mkhwananzi was not reachable for comment.
