A political commentator Alex Magaisa has mocked President Robert Mugabe following a video that has gone viral on social media showing hiom struggling to plant a tree during the tree planting day ceremony.
He said one day, some filmmaker will produce a film of Robert Mugabe's life - the good, the bad and the ugly ... and the most hilarious! He said that filmmaker won't be short of original footage and there have been a few classic ones in recent years but this is the most hilarious and pitiful - not to mention symbolic.
"Here, Mugabe is supposed to plant a tree, but instead he wants to unplant it! When a person plants a tree, they put soil into the hole where the tree is inserted, to cover the roots. But here, good old Bob is taking soil OUT of the hole - literally uprooting the tree! The poor chap tries desperately to gesture to Mugabe that he needs to direct the soil into the hole. But it falls on deaf ears," he said.
"At this point, of course, realising the disaster happening in front of cameras, the ever helpful Dr Amai, Grace intervenes and decides to take matters into her own hands - literally - and guide her old chap. Knowing one must avoid outshining the master and hoping to assuage his fears, she quotes a Biblical story to reassure him. No wonder she has said she doesn't need to campaign for President - she is already there!"
He said it's not surprising that Mugabe thinks Zimbabwe is doing well under his rule and he genuinely believes it, even though the evidence is completely to the contrary.
"Those of us who have had to deal with our elderly relatives can recognise a few things from this video. You have to be patient and persuasive when handling them. You indulge them but then at certain points you have to make strategic interventions, for their own good! Yet this man wants to run for the presidency in 2018 and there's a horde of people who think it's a good idea! Actually, this is cruel," he said.
"But the video also reminded me of Edison Zvobgo's anecdote of the madman of Ngomahuru who instead of passing on the baton to the next man in a relay race, decided to run away into the mountains. Here though, Grace decides to take the shovel from Mugabe's hands! This has to be the ZimAsset Video of the year!"
