MDC-T
senior official Tapiwa Mashakada has said his party's presence in government during the inclusive government resulted to excellent
service delivery which shows that if it is fully given a mandate to rule
poverty will be a thing of the past.
Mashakada said MDC is a social democratic party whose values include honesty, servant leadership, transparency, accountability, solidarity, freedom, democracy, equality among others.
"We are open to criticism where we fail to live up to our values. As a party we have always had comprehensive policies. Since its formation in 1999 the MDC has developed the following economic blueprints. These are: The Bridge, Restart, Art and Juice," he said.
"Our record in government speaks of itself. Average growth rate between 2009 and 2013 was 7%. We ran a cash budget. Revenue was usd4.2 billion. Expenditure was usd3.6 billion. In the education sector books were made available for each pupil at primary school level. Hospitals were equipped with drugs. Civil servants got their salaries and bonuses on time. The macro-economic environment was stabilized."
He said at the beginning of the inclusive government a sim card cost US$150 but in due course its cost was reduced to US$2.
"Mobile telephony penetration improved by 80% and even villages. By the end of the inclusive gvt herdboys were able to locate their herd or flock using cellphones. On infrastructure we completed projects that had stalled for the last 10 years before 2009. For instance the bridge at Waterfalls Zindoga along the Beatrice rd; the Hunyani river bridge near Norton, rehabilitation of the Plumtree-Mutare rd; the vic falls, Bulawayo airports, Kariba south, Tokwe Mukosi, Mtshabezi dam," he said.
"The one stop investment centre was our brain child. We delivered a new constitution. We put food on the table. The usd was plenty. What happened after 2013?? Check GDP growth at 1.6%, the budget deficit at usd1.5 billion per annum; cash shortages; no pay for civil servants, typhoid, no hospital drugs, food insecurity. People of Zimbabwe let us learn to give credit where it is due. As a peoples project the MDC will not die but live forever, we will not give up. But we cannot do it alone. We need the support of other political parties. This is our big tent approach."
