NATIONAL People's Party (NPP) leader, Joice Mujuru has organised a joint all-women campaign rally with MDC-T vice-president, Thokozani Khupe in Bulawayo tomorrow to encourage women participation in the 2018 general elections.
The programme, hosted by the Women Electoral Convergence (WEC), is aimed at mobilising at least one million new potential female voters to join in the campaign to dislodge the Zanu-PF government from power.
MDC Proportional Representation legislator, Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga said the Bulawayo indaba would be attended by more than 2 000 women from across all opposition political parties and was expected to be addressed by Mujuru, Khupe and People's Democratic Party women's wing chairperson, Lucia Matibenga.
"In attendance will be Mujuru, Khupe and Matibenga. The project, WEC 18, is targeting one million women voters in a movement of #HerVoteWins," Misihairabwi-Mushonga said.
Khupe has been at the forefront of MDC-T's move to mobilise women voters to ensure that her president, Morgan Tsvangirai wins the polls.
There are claims WEC 18 is meant to propel Mujuru to the helm of the proposed grand coalition of opposition parties.
But Khupe yesterday denied reports that the platform was meant to propel Mujuru to lead the coalition.
"My party has a candidate and we are fully behind Morgan Tsvangirai as our presidential candidate," she said.
Mujuru, on the other hand, has declared that she was ready to face Mugabe in next year's elections.
In an interview early this week, Mujuru said there was nothing wrong in expressing the desire to lead the coalition because opposition parties have not yet identified a candidate to lead them.
"My people want me to contest President Mugabe and I cannot refuse," she said. "We are still to come up with a candidate. So anyone can desire, but at the end of it all, the people will select the best candidate.
"People vote leaders into power for a reason. The same applies with the soldiers, police and even the farmers, who do so to protect their farms and the soldiers and police who would want one of their own and I'm available for them."
