Activists Patson Dzamara and Makomorero Haruzivishe were today sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after being found guilty of obstructing the course of justice.

Prosecutors convinced the court that the duo robbed two women in Harare's Africa Unity Square sometime in 2016.

Court heard that Dzamara and his co-accused resisted arrest and went on to grab police button sticks and caps which were never recovered.

Three months of the duo's sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The remaining nine months were also set aside on condition that they each perform 315 hours of community service starting Monday.

In his response after court proceedings, Dzamara said, "Horrible and disgusting...I have just been convicted together with my co-accused for a crime we didn't commit. How and why on God's earth would I steal a police officer's button stick and hat? The dictatorship can, will and must fall. This shall pass."

"In the past two years, I have been arrested more than 20 times, I have spent a number of days in prison, I have appeared in court more than 80 times, I have been abducted, I have been tortured, I have been smeared, I have lost assets, I have lost relationships, I have lost business and career opportunities but by God's grace, I didn't lose myself neither did I lose him. He says in the worst case scenario he faces two years in jail."
