IN a pure act of cruelty, a 31-year-old woman from Insuza in Matabeleland North Province was arrested after she repeatedly struck her 14-year-old stepdaughter with a stool on the forehead resulting in her loosing consciousness.
Sakhile Sibanda from Village 1, Mamboweni area had a brush with the law when she assaulted her stepdaughter Ethel Ngwenya with a stool and knobkerrie leading her to faint and sustain severe injuries on the forehead and left hand.
Sibanda, following her arrest and conviction, blamed her evil acts on the devil.
This was heard when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tinashe Tashaya facing assault charges.
She pleaded guilty and was convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which three months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining nine months were further suspended on condition that she completes 315 hours of community service at Jiba Primary School.
Sibanda was however, spared jail agony after she pleaded for lenience from the magistrate saying when she committed the offence she was possessed by the devil.
This was after the court had proved that on 2 June this year, Sibanda instructed her stepdaughter to remove ashes from the fireplace. While the girl was removing the ashes, she didn't notice they were still hot such that the broom which she was using to perform the task started burning.
The burning of the broom did not go down well with the accused who immediately took a knobkerrie and started assaulting the complainant with it once on the left hand.
As if that was not enough, Sibanda went on to take a wooden stool and viciously struck the helpless girl on the forehead leading her to lose consciousness. The girl was also injured in the process.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Sibanda's arrest and her subsequent appearance in court.
