The National Blood Service Zimbabwe has embarked on an aggressive drive to recruit and retain adult donors in an effort to increase blood stocks.
The NBSZ has targeted to collect 75 000 units of blood by the end of the year.
In order to achieve their set target they have embarked on an aggressive campaign to recruit and retain adult donors who in the past only constituted about 12% of donors.
The demand for the precious liquid has been increasing and according to NBSZ Public Relations Manager, Ms Esther Massundah, they want to increase their adult donor base and they are encouraging mostly people with blood group O to come forward with blood.
Ms Massundah said this Valentines' Day they are encouraging couples to come and celebrate their love in style by donating blood.
She said a similar programme will be held in Bulawayo.
The National Blood Bank has been procuring most of its blood from youths who constitute 80% of the donor population.
The adult population consumes most of this blood yet they are reluctant to donate.
